Tenets of neo-Pantheism
An excerpt from a book soon to be published by J.L.Robertson on Pantheism "Chapter 6 -The Ideology of neo-Pantheism". The following tenets form the basis for this new paradigm:
◊ neo-Pantheism is a modern, more rational religious/philosophical paradigm for living is needed by mankind because the old ones haven't gotten the job done. Such a paradigm must be compatible with reality.
◊ It is a neat consilience of sound modern ideas compiled from many sources negating some ancient mystical beliefs.
◊ There are no transcendental Gods, Masters or other Spirits. There are no supernatural spirits residing in Nature, persons or things.
◊ There are no parallel universes, Heaven, Nirvana or Happy Hunting Grounds, just this perceivable real world.
◊ There is no soul or afterlife only a material body enclosing a sensing, thinking Self that ends when the body dies. This Self is who a person is. There is neither reincarnation of this Self nor mystical elements to it.
◊ There are no miracles or spontaneous events because the Cosmos operates according to her natural laws of cause and effect.
◊ There are no supernatural answers to reality or human existence, science and reason can well explain physical mysteries and human evolution. Science provides temporary answers that beget more exacting truths.
◊ This singular Cosmos is eternal, evolving, rational, verifiable and the causation of all happenings and things.
◊ Our vast Cosmos is a grand, powerful, creative, mysterious and beautiful composite of many and all things. It merits awe and appreciation but not worshiping.
◊ The Cosmos appears to have no capacity for thought, no emotions, and no purpose. Humans do, thus the Cosmos in a trivial way does too.
◊ There is an essence to Nature that some may wish to call Panthea, a Goddess of limited attributes. A naturalistic, secular spirituality results from this essence making neo-Pantheism a kind of non-theist monotheism.
◊ Rightness and the rules for human compliance to it are self-evident.
◊ Enlightenment illuminates the Tao
◊ The family of man must be moral and guided by the rules of rightness.
◊ Homo sapiens are the apex of evolution on planet Earth and thus the most important life form on it. They form societies for survival and mutual benefits. The moral decencies are vital to the continued existence of those societies.
◊ The meaning of life is life itself. It is the warrant and sanction for its being. Life is not suffering nor repentance but what is made of it.
◊ The prime objective of human life is survival.
◊ The highest moral purpose of mankind is wellbeing.
◊ Self-responsibility and direction develop good personal Karma
◊ Family, virtue, good sex, enlightenment and self-responsibility aid survival and wellbeing.
◊ The mightiest means for realizing these objectives are reason and knowledge, not faith and belief. Boundless free inquire and enlightenment expands the wisdom that guides mankind to a better life.
◊ All of the peoples of the Earth of both sexes are equal though different. All deserve respect, fairness, and freedom.
◊ neo-Pantheism is not atheistic, esoteric, animistic nor dualistic. It is well-done wisdom illuminating the Tao.
◊ neo-Pantheism strives to be secular, moral, naturalistic, truthful, objective, logical, scientific, humanitarian, inclusive, optimistic, exuberant, evolutionary, Promethean and courageous. It affirms that human life can have a noble purpose.
◊ Any belief paradigm of the future must facilitate a healthier human existence. Thus it should promote democratic freedom, racial tolerance, female dignity, the right to be as one is or desires to be, population control, compassionate euthanasia, biological research, human evolution and a sustainable natural environment.
◊ This future paradigm must diminish war, crime, immorality, human misery, ignorance, supernaturalism, power/wealth concentration, elitism, and those activities that minimized the potentiality of any individual.
◊ Humanity has a grand destiny. A composite of the best of human thinking rather than any single dogma will best guide its evolution.
◊ neo-Pantheism is a paradigm for those who desire a 21st century more sensible and peaceful than the past. Such a paradigm must ensure the survival of mankind and wellbeing for all.
◊ A neo-Pantheist needed not accept individually all of these tenets nor any as being absolute and invariant. They are evolving ideas on which to live the present and build the future.
These tenets are in the process of being developed and coalescing. Thus they may change to fit better thinking. Suggestions are welcomed by the author.
neo-Pantheism is more believable
The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy states that "pantheism continues to be the traditional religious alternative to theism for those who reject the classical theistic notion of God. Not only is pantheism antithetical to theism, but certain religions are better understood as pantheistic rather than theistic when their doctrines are examined...certainly the central claims of pantheists are prima facie no more 'fantastic' than the central claims of theism and probably a great deal less so."
